A Wind in the Door by Madeleine L'Engle

Somehow more of a metaphysical mind-trip than the first book. While a A Wrinkle in Time is a fun sci-fi book with hints of religion, A Wind in the Door is practically a full-on celestial cosmic horror book (with a hint of microbiology.) Even I had trouble comprehending everything L'Engle was trying to present, but the plot, concept, and over-arching themes are still simple enough for kids to follow through and enjoy. Albeit with a few nightmares here and there.
