It’s a really good book that depicts the difficulties a parent goes through when they have to accept what is “unacceptable” in their eyes. We all now how South East Asia is with its social norms and the ideal of being the normal person in a normal family, having babies and working hard to earn a living. You can see that depicted and you can see how it clashes with what is essentially the rise of liberal norms and fight for freedom of identity. It can be a difficult book to read if you’re LGBTQ+ and part of an unaccepting family but it also showcases a scenario of resilient characters who keep on fighting for themselves no matter what which can be seen as inspiring.

I’m happy the book didn’t have a particularly “happy” ending but a realistic one. Instead of acceptance, the people who’ve been posed to harsh social norms their whole lives can at least try and live with the change rather than hold their ground…

It was a good read but not the most exciting one. I think I should’ve maybe been more familiar with the author and his literature before delving into something that more of a memoir than anything.

Not really sure if I can properly rate this book. The audiobook was not so much a reading of the story as it was a theatrical performance of it. I really good one of I may say… just not a word for word reading

My head hurts. I had to take breaks while reading this because some of the poems full on broke me. I will be reading that again very soon so I can fully immerse myself in the text and annotate it but for a ‘quick’ first read it’s absolutely fantastic and I hope more people read it because they need to know, they must know what it’s like…

This was such a good listen. Omg. I loved every single bit of it so so so much. Some chapters were nice and short and others were long and complex. The one thing they had in common was the end. The end never missed. It was always a banger, always thoughtful and true to the heart. I can’t wait to buy the book and read it again, this time with annotations and all that.
