Did not finish book. Stopped at 0%.
i wish i loved this book but the colonization makes me so angry (which means its doing well what it’s supposed to) but it also means i physically cannot listen to this any longer because i just want the romans destroyed. and i got spoiled that ruying ends up with anthony which annoys me personally only because i want him gone. obliterated. but that’s just my personal reason for not vibing w this book

i also wish there was a lot more worldbuilding because i find what little there was super interesting. would love  to learn more about how the magic system works, how it ties into their culture, the culture itself and traditions, how politics works? like the emperor is mentioned a few times in the background but you’d think it’d be important to discuss politics more considering the whole first part is about building political tensions

the ending is not satisfying. it’s not even cathartic. but it is fitting, like it was always the logical outcome. it’s poetic.

it’s not satisfying, and i don’t think it’s meant to be. this is not a story that is meant to make you feel good, it’s a warning tale.

in the world where everything terrible eventually worked out to a good ending requires a better world, better people than those protagonists that actually exist in that story. the point is, that people are messy, capable of doing bad things. and because there is no god, no deus ex machina to rescue them from the effects of our own wrongdoings, the price of their actions will always be felt.

even if the resulting deaths seem pointless, it would do the entire book a disservice to have them resurrected as if the characters actions had never mattered at all.

power always comes with a price. to love is to lose, if not now, then eventually. this is just how life is.

so what then do you do? faced with the ugly truth of reality, what can you do but make the choice to keep living, even when it hurts? maybe there is no cosmic absolution, maybe the only salvation we can ever receive is the forgiveness we give ourselves, for all that we have done, and all that we failed to do.

tldr: it gets gayer and more existential

i say this every time i read a new erha volume but this one makes me want to cry.  so many heart wrenching storylines in this one, the one with nangong xi and ye wangxi, the quality cousin time with mo ran and xue meng, and the anticipation of mo ran finally deciding he needs to tell chu wanning of his past life but he just can’t bring himself to do it quite yet… i am patiently (not) waiting for the next volume
