The movie is better. The pacing was poor, the group dynamic was boring (the movie's version of the characters is much more interesting and complex), and the ritual, cult, and monster were quite lame and underwhelming.
The way the author wrote about any brief mention of women made me think: this guy seems bitter he can't date if bros and blames women. He was also too interested in describing the one female character's genital smell while he was literally on the verge of death.
Just watch the movie.
