Luster by Raven Leilani

3.5 stars.
This is really hard to rate/review. The writing was gorgeous but blunt - I found myself highlighting so many lines and relating to Edie a lot. Leilani makes interesting commentary on race, sex and power dynamics but this was really exhausting to read? I felt really tired and happy it was done by the end.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

Ok this was pretty good but maybe one hundred pages too long. The narrative is very character driven so I guess nothing actually *happens* and that might not appeal to everyone which is fine. I find that Schwab’s prose is very repetitive in a slightly annoying way - I don’t need to read about Addie’s freckles, her hunger, Henry’s hair or Luc’s colour changing eyes every other page. It does edge on a bit too corny at times and reads a bit like a white hipster indie film.
One thing I did love was the art and literature and it’s importance that was weaved into the story. There are some beautiful passages about being a dreamer, ideas and the marks we leave behind.
I can definitely see a screen adaptation in the pipeline !
