The series here really takes a bit of turn. From here it turns from the 7 day history of the week of transformation into a "history" written in the months leading up to the war. At this point I'd argue that the unreliable narrator trope becomes the focus and it calls into question some of the things that we might have taken as fact in the first books. It also presents the "honorable reader" with a guest in the form of Thomas Hobbs. It's a great continuation of the tale, and by the end leaves a reader with more questions than answers.

Taking everything from "Too Like the Lightning" and further expanding the world this novel does an excellent job of delivering on the promises of the first book, and setting up the next. I will say that it does move a little quicker than the first, but the themes within this book remain just as dense as the first and asks a lot of questions of humanity.

The start to a spectacular series that paints an insteresting future for humanity and presented in a truly unique style. Using some wonderfully familiar tropes it makes for an fascinating read, but not always an easy one.
