The Secret Lives of Booksellers and Librarians by Matt Eversmann, James Patterson
3.25
writing wise it was whatever; many entries were too abrupt or brief, plus the collection could have been way shorter if there weren’t repeats of the same essence. and a lot of james patterson shout outs also (obviously, shameless plug type beat).
i WILL say it did its job of making sure i know i love books and community and hate censorship and recession. i do! none of this will ever change

EX.Mag, Vol. 03 by Peow Studio

adhd and life are absolutely insane bc why did this take me three years to get past the first comic. still worth the time taken to get through all of it. faves from this volume (on this read) were soldiers of fortune (ridiculous), magus (androgyny and betrayal), the gargoyle temple (horny), and boiling point (wordless, cartoony).

gina chung, the master of modern mundanity and introspection that you are…
this is one of those books where nothing really happens. i almost always hate that in movies, but i indulge in it in this medium, especially when it’s written as well as this. maybe i’m just dramatic beyond the point of return yet simultaneously immune to melancholy by now, but i also don’t think this ever tethered on the precipice of being overly morose. it was appropriately so. the unending and annoying grief of not feeling good enough for anything despite doing nothing wrong (amongst the other, more blatant things like the loss of a parent and a relationship) was done here so well, to me. i personally loved the loose ends of the story also. that’s how life is. that’s realistic. perhaps i’ll look out for this author’s other stuff

The Luis Ortega Survival Club by Sonora Reyes

very happy to read a story helmed by an explicitly neurodivergent protag. usually authors and readers skirt around these depictions and call them “coded” like plzzzplzplz how boring. i’m tired of speculation and hinting! anyway as for the book itself, i liked this more than tlgtcs and it was an engaging read (easy to follow, hard to brace). i too am waiting for my abusers to face a luis ortega style downfall but that probably won’t happen lol. never say never though :p

Lucky Boy by Shanthi Sekaran

soli being mexican felt too safe of a choice. idk how to explain it, like… lazy might sound harsh bc the author did say she did a lot of research but still. anyway 4 stars purely for how easy it was to read and for all the characters’ internalizing (i love a good look into people’s minds bc i myself am stuck in mine all the time and it’s great rep every time this happens in a novel lmao)
