The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

I just finished this book and I've been sitting in the same spot for 15 minutes trying to put into words how important this book is, how well it's written, and how angry I am that it even has to be written at all.

As a white, middle-class woman. I can't ever relate to what Starr and her family goes through on daily basis. I can empathize with what she goes through but I will never truly know her grief and the grief that her community struggles with. Angie Thomas has a way with words and putting police brutality and racism into perspective that I may not have understood without it. As I got closer to the end of the book, I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach knowing how it would end and it would be untruthful if it didn't. I still hoped for better and I hoped for justice.

This should be required reading in middle and/or high schools. So much can be learned from the 444 pages of this book.
