While it is certainly a feel good book, with valuable lessons on kindness & growing up kind in one of the least kind places in the world (middle school), I worry that this one veers too much on the side of sentimentality, rather than an authentic portrayal of such an experience. Maybe I’ve grown jaded. There are some wonderfully sincere passages, found mostly in Via’s point of view, but also in Auggie’s navigation of his own treatment of himself, but I think the they get lost in the attempt to drive home the point that Auggie is special outside of his difference (or because of it?). I’ll think on it, and hopefully return to this review later on.
