I have no words. Everybody should read or. listen to this book.
Yami is so relatable! And unapologetic! She's a lesbian, she knows she's pretty, she likes makeup and sneakers and making jewelry and social media and she is so full of culture. She's lovely. Her relationship to her parents is strained for different reasons but oh so relatable! Each character is multi faceted and has opinions and flaws and hobbies! Cesar, Yamis brother, was my favorite character! He's such a versatile character, always full of surprises but still very forward. Their bond is everything siblings could dream of having.
This book tackles race, colorism, racism, homophobia, biphobia, the ethics of adoption, religion, poverty, first love, mental illness and so much more. It is tactful yet direct and doesn't shy away from using the correct words for the occurring issues.
I listened to the audiobook version and oh my god! Karla Serrato! What a voice!
