The Salt Path by Raynor Winn
However, I did have some things I found rather unfulfilling about the story. Sometimes it seemed like the story was building up to a bigger plotpoint by using motifs (e.g. Moth reading Beowulf, talk of the children and Simon Armitage). These bigger plot points never came and the motifs disappeared. Additionally, I had expected more of the ending. The story ends when the main characters finish the walk but there is no additional depth to the ending. The reader doesn’t find out what happens with the fears that have been central to the second half of the book - will Moth’s health decline rapidly again? Will he enjoy returning to uni? Will Ray get a job? It left me rather unsatisfied.

The Salt Path was an enjoyable read. I particularly liked the descriptions of the coastal landscapes and the frank discussion of homelessness. The story was at times quite repetitive but this aided Winn in conveying what life on the path actually was like. The main themes of the book - the outrage at being homeless, the struggle to accept Moth’s illness, and the importance of nature - were inspiring and made me grateful for the life I live.
