Strong character development:

Positives:
- I adore Althea & cannot wait to see where her journey goes in this trilogy… she’s so Lilah Bard from ADSOM meets Vin from Mistborn meets Elizabeth Swan from Pirates of the Caribbean & I’m fucking with her heavy.
- I also am super intrigued by Vivacia; she reminds me a lot of Lady Amalthea from The Last Unicorn.
- the whole concept of the magic of liveships is so unbelievably cool & unique and creative & I honestly can’t wait to see how this series goes & how it ties into Fitz/The Fool’s story!!!
Negatives:
- this book ultimately was soooooooo slow and repetitive and did not need to be nearly as long as it was? I understand that it was building up this world/these characters/the trajectory of the next two books but I sincerely feel like a lot could have been cut out.
- most of the characters (except for Althea & Vivacia & Althea’s mom) I hated honestly. Kyle was absolutely insufferable to read from (I understand that we are meant to not like him, but the book bordered on unenjoyable at times because of how often he was present). Malta also sucked (in her defense, I get that she’s just a child), but she very much reminds me of an annoying as spoiled little girl who absolutely would have been played by Bailee Madison in an early film 2000’s adaption of this story ahaha. I also wasn’t the biggest fan of Althea’s sister either, though I do sympathize with why she’s the way she is. Pretty much every other male character in this also made me cringe?? & don’t ask me to tell you a single thing about Kennit’s POV’s because I didn’t understand or care!
- The moments of romance in here were also deeply cringe to me & felt very written by a man?? I just need every man to stay away from my girls Althea & Vivacia quite frankly…. (Though Wintrow & Brashen are like alright I guess)

These stories were all really good & every single time I finished one I was like “this couldn’t possibly get any weirder” & then it would

This was a crazy cool concept… a literal hellscape being inflicted upon man after playing God through scientific creation, and a creation with such a deep hatred for man who created him that it could not even put word to that hatred & only slowly destroyed and tortured them all

This one made me cry lads.
Absolutely adorable and I loved the bard-core aesthetic & I went into this blind and was so heartwarmed by the contents of this 🫶.
My only grievance is I’m so sad my arc was in black and white because K. O’Neill’s art is so stunning and I need to see it in color!!!!

Food critic psychopath + depraved sex addict = A murderous cannibal <3
(we love a girlboss with a hobby!)
This truly was like being in the mind of Pearl x Hannibal x Dexter x Patrick Bateman & I had so much fun reading this.
There’s also so many beautiful and raw quotes in here & I annotated it so much

This felt very comparable to Pride and Prejudice in a lot of ways??
Positives:
- I really did enjoy the affair between Anna & Vronsky and all of their passion and toxicity; especially earlier in their first meetings, the tension was palpable
- I was very surprised at all of the feminism (there were a lot of Amy March in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women adaption-coded feminist monologues that went hard) & critiques of the marriage market, religion, the Russian dynasty, treatment of women/their place in society, high society in general, capitalism, the rich elite, & a lot of advocacy for the working class/the poor that were soooooo good for how old this book is
- I do think this book was very vivid
Negatives:
- it was simply too long and rambly & it hit a point where I was really over it during the last third-ish & just wanted it to end. There were a lot of side characters undergoing their own courtly high society drama that I cared about earlier in the novel, but in the end I was very over it.
- even though this was ahead of it’s time I feel in relation to it’s feminism it was still out of pocket very misogynistic at times which was a vibe kill & quite contradictory
- the racism near the end 🙄
