⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
I have some pretty mixed feelings about this book. The first 50 pages of it felt almost completely useless, & I honestly was considering dnfing. I held on hope, because I’ve had such high expectations for this book so I wanted to see it through, plus it’s so short. Once the robot showed up I feel like it got a lot better. I loved the robot & reading it’s perspective on the world around it as well as it’s general outlook on life. I also loved the robot’s dynamic with the monk, and there were a lot of philosophical conversations in here that were quite interesting to break down and think about for myself and my own life. I also felt like the nonbinary representation & the overall cozy aesthetic was good. I just feel as though the world-building was sorely lacking and the commentary it was trying to do didn’t really make an impact on me? I feel like it should have been longer, or even that first 50ish pages could have been dedicated more to the world-building. Overall, I’m not mad at this book & it definitely has redeeming qualities; perhaps my expectations were just too high? Idk.

Firstly, thank Netgalley for the e-arc for review! Now here are my thoughts
Positives:
- Middle grade whimsy captured well within an upper YA with Ava Reid-esque flowery prose
- the sapphic romance :)
- the magic, the folkloric quality, the whimsical dark forest & fae
Negatives:
- at times the pacing felt really off, & same with the plot? I almost feel like this book could have just been a smaller novella.
- once I hit the halfway mark I lost quite a bit of interest & found myself skimming through parts of the second half

Tbh actually devastated to be dnf’ing this but I am just…. Not a fan. I do like the dialogue and intensity of the protagonist, but the world feels very discombobulating & all over the place & the inclusion of vampires feels so random??
