I definitely liked this more than Light of the Jedi!
Positives:
- I love these characters so much and the more I read the more invested I become. Elzar is SO interesting, Burryaga & Avar I NEED to see more of, & Vernestra but also Bell <3. I missed some of the Middle Grade/YA characters, but I love so many of them
- the plot in here definitely felt stronger then the first adult book & a bit more accessible
- I was very locked in and binged this in 2 reads
Negatives:
- still a tad confusing to follow in ways that definitely lost me a times
- a liiitttttlleeee bit boring/repetitive at times too which was the biggest thing that docked stars tbh. For a book that was so jam packed with action I kept asking myself like damn, why am I kinda bored?

Positives:
- Reath Silas my Samwell Tarly x Peeta Mellark x Jayce Talis x Viktor (Arcane), x The 10th & 11th Doctor from Doctor Who-coded beloved….
- you mean to tell me the Jedi temple in Coruscant is built on top of the one and only Sith Temple from the Sith Empire/Old Republic era…… craZ
- I loved all of the conversations about Light x Dark and how the only reason why it’s so deeply problematic between the two is because of the Jedi’s forced separation of the two instead of an understanding that light and dark exist in all things. I know this is a controversial & hot topic in the Star Wars universe, but personally I would LOVE if these books/films/tv shows explore this more
- the Jedi are like way more lax/chill about their rules in this era then I expected tbh
- Claudia Gray’s writing in Star Wars is just so brilliant and big brain & well researched & emotional/hard hitting & complex & it kills me everytime
Negatives:
- I honestly only cared about Reath’s perspective and the other perspectives kinda lost me
- I also really didn’t care about the plot all that much & felt pretty bored constantly.

An absolutely bizarre fever dream of a novella
Positives:
- This felt borderline dissociative similar to Bunny by Mona Awad (not similar subject matter, but the writing styles felt similar)
- I loved the artistic and experimental writing style. It genuinely felt like if Piranesi and The Haunting of Hill house had a horrifying little child.
- none of the characters were named & instead were caricatures to represent different family dynamics and the ways in which they are preyed upon based on those stereotypes.
- genuinely very disturbing & grotesque at times.
- This author really captured childlike horror/confusion/fear/and misunderstanding in a way that truly felt like a liminal space, almost like the movie Skinamarink, as well as the vibes of “the backrooms.”
- I always ride for books that use fungal horror metaphor for rotted and abusive family dynamics
Negatives:
- almost too weird/experimental and I’m definitely walking away from it a bit confused, this might be a slightly generous 4⭐️

Positives:
- I loved how this bridged some gaps in Han & Leia’s story across all of the movie trilogies + the Solo movie. It definitely added/explained some lore that was cool
- the audiobook production <3
Negatives:
- I honestly really didn’t care about the plot in this one
- I also didn’t love how Han & Leia were characterized at times?

Dnf 22% in, I’ve been trying to read this for a few days now and I honestly just have no desire to pick it up. I think the Ali Hazelwood spell might be lifted

Loveable characters:
Yes
We are all the republic frfr ✊
Positives:
- I love being in a brand new Star Wars Saga & right off the bat I feel like this could be truly the next big 9 movie/3 trilogy Star Wars franchise with a High Republic tv show eventually to mirror the clone wars like I can see it so clearly in front of me.
- I thought this was a really cool story & narrative & I loved so many of the characters and this made me really excited to continue on and read the rest of these
- I was pleasantly surprised at the tone of this as well? I was honestly expecting a lighthearted romp of Jedi in their prime in a very positive light, and how much morally greyness and complexity was in this reaaaaaaalllyyyy surprised me
- wookie jedi :) <3
Negatives:
- what lowered my rating so much was honestly I do not feel like this was a very accessible entry point to this saga (which is very irritating), & I would not be surprised if many dnf this or choose not to continue because it’s so confusing. This really just throws you into the middle of everything with absolutely no explanation or guidance in a way that feels really pretentious honestly in like a “if you’re a true Star Wars fan you’ll get it” kind of way, & it’s really annoying. I’m a huge Star Wars fan, & there’s a lot I’m walking away from this confused by still. (What made me even finish this at all is the high praise this entire saga gets, AND that most high republic fans seem to have a common consensus that this is the worst high republic novel & to push through as the rest are better 🤷🏼♀️
Ultimately:
- I really enjoyed and was locked into the story (even though elements of the mechanics of how things worked/who people were/their intentions were confusing and hard to follow at times)
- I loved a lot of the characters and their dynamics with each other
- some moments I was on the edge of my seat & I also almost even teared up at times???
- I’m very excited to read more of these and see the bigger story happening and where this is all going!!!

DNF 62% In :(
I loved the beginning of this and honestly thought this was gonna be like a 5-4⭐️ read, but the middle portion really lost me.
I just kind of became bored and stopped caring and started skimming it. I knew it would be at best a 3⭐️ & I just have other stuff I want to read more
There was a lot of really pretty and whimsical/studio ghibli-core writing and I get why people like it
