Brethren, it is fucking brutal
adventurous dark slow-paced

I’m about to get controversial on the main

The things I liked:
- this world & magic system is genuinely so brilliant and I truly adore Robin Hobb’s writing, & character building.
- I really adore Althea and her storyline is quite frankly the only one I’m interested in in this trilogy
- I also adore Vivacia and all I’m rooting for at this point is for Althea and Vivacia to reunite and fuck everyone and everything else idc
- the first 200ish pages of this I was actually quite invested in, but dare i say it lost me quite quickly roughly halfway in.
- cool dragon stuff mentioned ??? Quite confused by what is going on there, but i am a dragon lover

The things I did not like:
- literally every other character….. especially the men… every single man in the series is actually so insufferable. The written by a man vibes is crazy because I know Robin is better then this but god damn. I kept telling myself “the 90’s were a different time I guess, the more you read the better they’ll get.”
- There’s some pretty rampant rape-y vibes at times as well as just the constant misogyny that’s quite hard to trudge through at times.
- the pacing & general subject matter of this book. I’m sorry, but soooooo much of this book felt so deeply unnecessary & I was so over it.

If I wasn’t so locked into getting back to Fitz & The Fool because of how much I love them, I honestly would have dnf’d this book/this trilogy. However, the masses say there is knowledge in this trilogy that’s very beneficial to future Fitz/The Fool trilogies so I am locking in for their sake 🫡

⭐️⭐️.75

Positives:
- loved the dnd vibes and all of the nerdy little references to critical role, dragon age etc were all really fun!
- dealt with some really real and raw topics like homophobia, abusive relationships etc and had some really good & important conversations throughout.

Negatives:
- did not care for Art or Darcy, sorry tbh I found them boring & found the romance quite cringe and rushed
- fuck James but also fuck cheating and I didn’t love the way that dynamic was flushed out in here

This was a pretty solid 4-3ish⭐️ read in the first half & it quite fun. However, how rushed the romance felt and how icky the cheating and lack of communication felt reaaaaalllyyy took me out of it.

TRAAACCCYYYYYYYYYY

The way I finished this book, closed it, and screamed into a pillow at almost 1:00 in the morning.

Tracy diva I’m begging you not to make me wait 3 years for the next one 😭😭😭

I’m a Bree x Nick x Sel polyamory believer and this book confirmed it to me more than anything like… :

“Nicholas Davis and Selwyn Kane. The Sun and the moon. Does she know the moon lives in you too?”
“She does. Just like she knows the Sun lives in you.”

GIIRRRRRLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

OR:

“A king, a knight . . . and a prince.”
“What . . . Shall . . . We . . . Do?”

Tracy no like it’s so fine that there’s no title or cover or release date or anything like it’s so chill no rush or anything bestie

⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 this was so much fun; I so desperately yearn for more DND romances

Positives:
- I adored the Critical Role-core of it all
- the distrust-lovers trope alongside their dnd characters kinda also being Legolas and Gimli if you think about it was awesome
- there was a Baldur’s Gate reference….
- some really cute moments in here with the romance but also the friend group

Negatives:
- unfortunately, the romance felt too insta-lovey for me and it was really taking me out of how much I loved everything else about this.
- at times the plot felt a tad messy and shoved together in this one

Kristy Boyce I beg of you for more of these they are so fun….. hear me out diva, book three is DM x player, and then you break into the adult romance with a dnd book inspired by Baldur’s Gate 3 girl hear me out……

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

I fear the world-building just became too convoluted & sloppy for my liking…. The medieval Arthurian-core and gay tension is great, but everything about how the plot/world is strewn together is losing me & the more I read the more Cassandra Clare it feels & I’m just over it tbh

Crying as I build Lego’s & re-organize my bookshelves while I listen to this because not all tears are evil and all that…..

These gay ass lovers… I love Tolkien so much for creating them
fast-paced

I might be too stupid for this, but there were some really beautiful quotes in here holy moly

Gay af 😔✊

On a real note, Emily Wilson created something truly special with her translation (which is the first translation of the Iliad by a woman). She, through acts of wizardry maintained beautiful and poetic language in a way that felt very very accessible for future/younger generations to be able to pick up a daunting read like this and be able to follow along with it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.75

Positives:
- I was really able to shut my brain off and have fun with this for the most part
- I very obsessively couldn’t stop thinking of this & needed to binge it all (as feverishly as I get when I read Emily Henry tbh)
- I really loved Adam as a love interest (as a lowkey reylo shipper I had fun), he also kind of reminded me a lot of my own partner & it was just really wholesome to read at times
- was a fun romance dynamic & the plot was also genuinely good

Negatives:
- the live laugh love-core language that riddled most of the language in this book
- the miscommunication tropes (plural) were arguably too irritating at times and genuinely made me angry/upset at times (sincerely I needed to put the book down and ground myself and remind myself it wasn’t real lool)
- some of the cringe smut dialogue… bffr “what if it’s too big 🥴?” “You can take it🥴” actually put a bullet in my brain I hated thatttt.
- the last line made me laugh out loud cringe I’m sorry but I’m also not

In conclusion, this book did have me kicking my feet and giggling and it was a really fun time. However, I was also in a damn near rage and skimming through some portions of miscommunication because I was so utterly sickened by it & it did (maybe partially contribute to the lowered star rating teeheeee)
