Does it help if I say I read 350 pages almost in one sitting. Today. This is the most perfect ending to this series, to this universe Leigh Bardugo has created. I laughed, I cried, I squealed and kicked the air because I’m extra. It just all feels done now. Everything is as it should be, and that’s the best thing one can say about an ending.

The whole Darkling plotline has me fuming but damn if I didn’t love the rest.

I cried a thousand tears. I loved this book to death but I also in a way wish it had been able to end differently, but also that was really the only way it could end and it was a great ending, the best ending to a series I’ve ever read. I just love these characters and wish they could’ve had more.

If you think this is a lighthearted fantasy for kids, you’d be wrong. The concepts in this book are horrifying, the main character Lyra faces some horrible abuse and hardships, and though it’s perfectly understandable for a child, I didn’t fully grasp the horrors of this universe until I reread as an adult.
Graphic: Body horror, Child death, Death, Gun violence, Physical abuse, Torture, Violence, Trafficking, Medical trauma
There’s a lot of discussion and descriptions of what is essentially an awake lobotomy but worse and more traumatic and fatal. Descriptions of violence and body horror, descriptions of experimentation on children including a form of torture that isn’t real but is still horrific to read about.
