“do you think I am an automaton? — a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? you think wrong! — I have as much soul as you — and full as much heart! and if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh: it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal — as we are!”

reader, I finally finished Jane Eyre, and it was the most gut-wrenching, soul-touching experience I’ve ever had regarding a piece of literature. I assure you, dear reader, my tear-stained cheeks and puffy, red eyes are testimony to this.

Charlotte Brontë’s work has been my companion for almost the past month, which means that I’ve savoured every single word in her book, since I am nothing if not a girl who devours books until there is no place left in her insides for more (or until the book is finished, there really is no in-between).

the story follows Jane Eyre, a young girl left orphaned at her frivolous aunt’s mercy. after numerous incidents that occured at her aunt’s house, Jane gets sent to an institution. in Lowood School, we explore alongside our heroine the first traces of girlhood and female friendship, as well as Jane’s first experience with death outside of her own family. after graduating school, she goes on to become a governess, teaching a ten year old girl, Adèle, who lives at Thornfield Hall.

Thornfield Hall, and, in consequence, its owner… Mr. Rochester. Never thought I would be falling head over heels for a man written in the 1840s, but if you know me, you know of my taste for Byronic heroes; they are my weakness, my Achilles’ heel, if you will. plus, who does not love a brooding, romantic male lead who’s also, being quite blunt, a little ugly? But my girl Jane loved him too, and their love is everything a woman could wish for (except for the whole having a wife locked up in the attic sort of thing… but, hey, we’ve all got our flaws).

the writing, the story, the characters, truly everything about this book was perfect. Jane Eyre pushed me to join an Oxford course on the Brontë sisters, hence, we will see how that goes. I shall keep you updated, dearest reader. now, back to the book… I have been sobbing uncontrollably for the past couple of hours because of the ending. however, let me tell you, dear reader, that I cannot be happier she married him.
