"Especially Heinous" was hard to slog through, however "Inventory" and "Difficult at Parties" made this read entirely worth it. The women in this book aren't saints and some of them are wholly unlikeable people but it does raise the question of circumstance because the things that happen to them are arguably worse. At some points, it does feel like an overzealous trauma circle jerk under the guise of "suffering is what makes you woman" that quite a bit of speculative femfic is guilty of. All that said, I'm not completely mad at it. "Difficult at Parties" deals with trauma in a way that doesn't feel hopelessly endless like some of the other stories do. It follows a woman as she tries to recover from sexual trauma and in the process, begins to hear the thoughts of actors in porn videos. Her partner does his best to push her recovery along but after a while, it begins to feel like he's doing to account for the lack of normalcy he feels due to her trauma processing. I won't ruin the ending but if you decide to read only one of the stories out of this collection, I'd recommend this one.
