5 stars for sentimental value. Objectively? Maybe 4 or 4.5. Not how to explain why and how I understand Sukie, but yes.

There were some really good parts but the rest rather falls flat, hence only 3.5 stars. This fell on the more gloomy side of J-lit instead of cozy comforting, there is one interesting twist of the plot, but from 5 stories, only two in particular stood out.

A big let down. For a book that talks about something as important & significant as the Magdalen laundries, I was expecting so much more... depth? More punch? I wish it was braver, or at least a little more serious or carefully handled and not written very subtly & coy as if Keegan is just brushing the surface of the matter and tell the readers "well, there you go" and dust her hands off before tying it all neatly with a cute, happy ending. I don't know. Much more left to be desired.

I see the vision, but not something I enjoy or relate to. Maybe another work of hers would do me better.
