i wanted to like it more. it felt like it lacked a lot of the complexity that i typically enjoy when reading mary oliver’s poetry. i did really like ’the first time percy came back’ though

I would like to be fair because there were things that I believe were beautiful about this book. There were moments I got quite choked up. However, I think the translation lost a significant amount of emotion and meaning in English that it would have had in Japanese. Most of the book felt very cut and dry, which made it feel it a really slow read for me. Occasionally there is a passage that would catch me, but perhaps that was just because it was slightly more flowery than the rest of the book? I would absolutely reread it if it was retranslated because it seemed like such a gorgeous idea for a novel, this one just fell a little flat. Don't let this review discourage you though! I still liked it, so try it out!

Genuinely a heartbreaking play. I could not put it down for a moment.

I think the concept for the short story was really interesting which is why I'm definitely planning on reading more of N.K. Jemisin's work. I really wanted to like it more, but I felt that it left little up for interpretation or imagination, which is just something that I have a personal preference for. But as someone who typically really doesn't like science fiction, I'm definitely going to give more of Jemisin's work a shot because short stories are never indicative of an author true writing style I feel
