"All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than others." ~ George Orwell, Animal Farm.

I've always been a big fan of history. Because of this, I selected History as one of the subjects to study for my A Levels. During those classes I learnt about the Russian Revolution. Today I have finished reading Orwell's 'Animal Farm' and have been reminded of what I was taught in my A Level History classes.

To anyone that has knowledge of the Revolution, it is clear that Mr Jones is a portrayal of Tsar Nicolas ll. Old Major is both Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin, providing the inspiration for the Rebellion. Napoleon is clearly based on Joseph Stalin, Snowball on Leon Trotsky and Squealer is representative of the Propaganda used at the time.

Orwell's writing throughout is brilliant. It's a short, simply written book that kept me gripped throughout, even though I kind of knew the story beforehand. Napoleon (or should I say Stalin?) is a detestable character that just becomes more power hungry as the story develops, leading from a Marxist dream to an evil Dictatorship, worse than what came before the Revolt.

If you have even the slightest interest in politics, history, dystopian fiction, classic fiction or you just like anthropomorphic farm animals, this book is worth a read.

"The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again: but already it was impossible to say which was which."

I have the extreme pleasure of knowing Jayde, the author and illustrator of this book. But even without that connection, I can see this is a simple but heartwarming story about loss and grief with breathtaking illustrations.
