I knew it was quite different from the film but didn’t realise just how different it would be. They are entirely different beasts, and not just in the medium. I want to say that the book as is would be unfilmable, but I would probably have said the same of the film we got had it been a novel first. Grim stuff, even through the dark humour, and worth a read.

Relistened before I finally get round to listening to Act III. It’s obviously great.
Purchased long before the accusations against Gaiman.

Even parking the accusations, there’s some really dull stuff in here. Some great stuff too, but the lows are rather low.
To be clear, I bought this years ago and am just clearing out my Audible library of unread stuff. I didn’t buy this after the accusations came out, that wouldn’t be very me.

It’s nice that Ben Elton came back to doing satire, but this is an absolute mess that spectacularly fails to succeed at what it is attempting. I bet 50-something white blokes think it’s fantastic though.

Far too long, it needed a much harsher editor. Interesting at times, but I have forgotten so much of it already because the stories all blur together. It has added quite a lot to my watchlist though.

I wish the film had done more to cover the constant stream of ideas Monk has, things he reads, issues he considers etc. rather than just that one scene from the book that is acted out in front of him. Most of that worked well, although I could’ve done without the lengthy academic paper. The family side of things still doesn’t work for me, more even than in the film because the charm of the actors isn’t there on the page.
It feels weird to review a book and solely make comparisons to the adaptation, but I read the book because of the film so it’s the viewpoint I’m coming at it from.
