Picks up exactly where Fourth Wing left off, thank gods ;) it hits the ground running and never slows. Violet is frustratingly hard on Xaden in the first half and my feelings toward her start to really sour but she figures out how to get out of her own way and redeems herself, for now. Once again the second half had me reading at breakneck speed only to slam into an infuriating cliff hanger.

I enjoyed this one more than the first in the series. While I felt the plot of the first one was all over the place, You’ve Been Volunteered does much less and stays focused from start to finish. Jen has lightened up (or perhaps has been humbled) and it made for a lighter and funnier read.
fast-paced

Unlike the first installment this book took off running right out of the gate. It slows in the middle as it creates a painful slow burn, picking up the pace again in the 3rd act hurtling readers into a cliff hanger ending the book at a moment that could only make me say aloud, “oh come on!!”.

I kept losing interest in this book. I finally finished it out of stubbornness to not have a DNF.

I was initially interested due to the title, I thought it would be funnier. The storylines are heavy and there are many of them. Too many characters to keep straight and after how long winded this book feels and how slowly everything progresses we get quick tied in a bow endings in a quick flash forward. Make it make sense…

This book was not a “rom-comy” as other titles from Sophie Kinsella. Just over halfway through the plot takes a few unexpected twists that draw you in but the payoff almost doesn’t feel worth the slow read that is the first half.
dark emotional slow-paced

The first 20 or so chapters to me, were the longest to read. I finished the rest in two days time.

The book starts slow, and says so much yet provides so little. For the first few chapters I wasn’t sure if our storyteller was male or female, they quite literally never said and he or she, perhaps the name Feyre gives it away, but it was unclear to me.

There are aspects to this story that liken itself to a tale as old as time 😉 going so far as to give us a scene in a grand library that no one has used for years..

Fantasy and more gore than I was anticpating but still there were times when I found myself emotional. I also had times where I felt very stressed.

When I started reading it, I felt like I would only finish it out of sheer stubbornness. But in the third act, the story really grips you and now I am ready to read the sequel (and subsequent books in the series).

Based on the title, I wanted to love it, but it fell kind of short for me. For starters there are way too many characters to keep straight, I kept forgetting who everyone was as I was still read it. The emails are the best part of the book, and while you expect some outlandish things to occur, this story had way too much going on to even pretend for it to be plausible.

I of course will read the series because I can’t not see this through, but let’s just say I hope we see growth from Jen in the next one.

It pains me to rate this so low, but this book is not well written and is very out of character for Sophie Kinsella. None of the characters have any redeemable qualities and the switching of perspective each chapter was clunky and distracting.  There was just something off about the whole book.

Exactly what you’d expect. Light, airy, witty and some far fetched physical comedy. I found myself smiling, giggling & kicking my feet with excitement as I read it.
