the premise was interesting and the writing was okay but the mc was so SO infuriating and the romance was not needed. everytime something “romantic” happened it would just annoy me and on top of how the mc was acting i was just so irritated throughout the whole book.

its hard to explain but the mc constantly thinks everyone is against her and if they dont do what she says she calls them traitors even without getting the full context. she constantly jumps to conclusions and is so hypocritical. shes controlling and possessive and she also blames everyone but herself for her problems which ends up kinda tying into the story but it was just annoying to have her whine and complain the whole damn book.

there were more things i didn’t like than things i did like. the descriptions and facts about the sea creatures were nice as well as accurate. same with the stuff about diving i was learning new things pretty often. ngl thats all i liked.

not gonna read again. wouldn’t recommend.

(the blocked out spoiler is very vague but could ruin the ending)

this book is in 3 different povs being opaline, martha and henry. each pov would be a new chapter so nothing ever got confusing for me. quick note but i am in no way a woman hater but i am a hater for how these women were written.

i didnt realize until pretty late in the book opaline is from the 1920-40s while the other 2 main characters are from the 21st century. opaline annoyed me at times practically falling in love with every man she met. her story gets very dark and she was written okay i had to keep reminding myself shes from the 1900s and women didnt have rights then so when she was being helpless it was literally because she was. i like strong independent and smart fmcs so she was not a character i enjoyed but i can see why other people could like her. i cant give too much away bc her story is very important to the plot.

martha ran away from an abusive marriage and went to work as a live in housekeeper. there she meets henry. i get she was unpacking her trauma but some of the things she did pissed me off so bad.
if she wasn’t kinda important to the plot i honestly think the book would’ve been just fine without her in it
cant say i enjoyed her all that much. her boss was a diva tho loved her.

henry went to Ireland trying to find the past of opaline and the manuscript + bookshop. without his obsession with the bookshop the plot would literally not have made any progress. i enjoyed his character quite a bit he was very humorous and relatable for me. his pov was my favorite part and honestly the only time i enjoyed this book.

i didn’t like this book and wouldn’t recommend it.
