City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

This was actually a bit better than I expected. It's not the best book I've ever read, but it's not terrible either. The Mortal Instruments series as a whole is pretty mediocre to me. I wouldn't ever reread any of the books. That said, there was just enough intrigue to keep me reading through. This book is no exception. I don't really like the characters of Clary and Jace too much (too cliche), but the whole incest twist makes them quite interesting to read. I don't really like Maia the werewolf too much (she's pretty much just there to be a love interest to Simon), and Simon is mostly there just to add to the whole love triangle thing. And now, starting in this book, he's also an OP vampire who can go in the sun... for some reason. Alec is okay, but pretty much the only reason why he's here is to be the one gay character. Literally the only thing the story focuses on is his being gay. I'd like to have a LITTLE more character development, at least. To be honest, the only character I actually like is Magnus Bane. It's a little hard to dislike him, even if I wanted to.
Well, that's that. Read it if you want, but don't expect too much.
