'"Vanessa", she says gently, "You didn't ask for that. You were just trying to go to school."'

This one hurt. The prose hooked me and there were times that I couldn't stop reading (I've spent the last three hours binging the final stretch), but the writing felt so *real* at times that I could feel my mood dropping with every word. Vanessa felt authentic to me, in a way that a book character hasn't felt to me in a long time. I could see a lot of myself in her, which I guess is why so many of the heavier scenes hit me so hard. Even though I will never meet her, my heart aches for her all the same. The graphic accounts of her abuse will haunt me, but I will also remember the first tentative steps taken by her towards her future.
