This book may be one of my favorite books. I love a good coming of age story and this book is a series of coming of age vignettes. I love seeing Esperanza’s character grow and grapple with identity, womanhood, culture, and community.

Incredibly tender. As an academic, lover of literature, and part of a sisterhood of my own, I felt a deep connection to Antonia. I read this entire book in one day.

I absolutely loved the stories included in this book, both historical and current. They really paint a picture of the white male legacy in this country, and Oluo does a good job putting those stories in greater context. The book’s conclusion is a much needed wrap up that puts a lot of the book in perspective and looks at moving forward as a nation. I do think the further description and context in each chapter gets a bit repetitive. This is a heavy read but a good one to push yourself through.

I really enjoyed this book, but the last 80 pages really drug on forever and got repetitive. Almost like the author needed to reach a page limit on a college essay. Regardless, if you like music and/or the 1970s, I recommend. This seemed like a YA novel, except for all the drug use. So if you like YA, I also recommend it.

Powerful and emotional. The back cover says “you are carrying in your hands a black woman’s heart” and I don’t think I could describe it any better. Poetry about being black, a woman, queer, and American.
