Death Valley by Melissa Broder

A strange and interesting book about a woman mourning the relationship she had with her father as a child, and dealing with his impending death. A lot of surrealism which I love, but I didn't really connect with this book. It was strange and funny and entertaining but ultimately it just didn't feel meant for me.

This book didn't do it for me. The banter felt strange and unrelatable and the MMC was super unattractive to me. I'm sure this book will be loved by many but it wasn't my piece of cake!

This was pretty fun and it was nice to read an Ali Hazelwood book that had an actual plot (no offense cus I like her other books too). I liked that it was single POV which is my preference. I skip sex scenes cus I'm a prude so it's great when romance books don't have too many that are important to the plot.

I can imagine this is a book people will love or hate. For me, it felt like it was written for someone with a brain just like mine.

I requested an arc of this book from Simon & Schuster Canada because the cover looked completely absurd. I'm the type of person who will always like a book with an absurd cover. It's really important to judge a book by its cover in this case because, tbh if you hate this cover you'll probably also hate the book.

The premise of this book- Reality Kahn is 23 and she's very strange. We're not 100% sure why she's so strange, although theories are alluded to. Anyways, Reality decides she needs a boyfriend. More importantly, she decides that she needs to be a girlfriend. Becoming the perfect girlfriend becomes Reality's mission, her quest. Shes very naive and very desperate to please and we see her go on a very strange journey to become her idea of the perfect girlfriend. Reading this book definitely gives you a sense of detachment from reality, especially as you get closer to the end.

Paradise Logic is completely absurd, surreal, hilarious, and also pretty dark. It definitely made me think a lot about my younger self, and even my current self. It's certainly a book that will stay with me. I read it in one sitting and had a great time doing so. The book had a very interesting way of mixing light silly fun with and underlying darkness and sadness. I really did see a lot of myself in Reality and I really hope she has a happy life.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what Sophie Kemp does next! Thank you to Simon & Schuster for the advanced copy of this book!

Did not finish book. Stopped at 73%.
Idk the prose of this book was pretty nice and the premise was interesting but at 73% there's just nothing pulling me back. I'm bored and ready to move on. Nothing is really happening and the vibes aren't good enough to make up for that

The Fourth Consort by Edward Ashton

I really like Edward Ashton's writing! I've read all his books from Mickey 7 on, and each one I've liked more than the last. His books are a very accessible version of sci Fi because the stories are personal and comedic, but they are accessible without being too simple. They have complex and interesting world building just on a small scale.

The Fourth Consort reminded me a lot of Antimatter Blues, the sequel to Mickey 7 which is one of my favourite stories. It also reminded me a bit of the spin off Animorphs book, the Andalite Chronicles.

I love stories about diplomatic relations between aliens because there's so many places you can go with them.

I won't go too much into plot points in this review because I found it enjoyable to read the book and figure out what was happening as I went.

If you're a fan of this authors other books you'll definitely like this one too. Id recommend it as well to fans of Becky Chambers and other more light hearted sci-fi authors.

Thanks so much to the publisher for the advanced copy!!

This is a great YA novel about an enslaved teenager named Junie who lives in Alabama around 1860. She is a housemaid to a girl named Violet who she grew up with and sees almost as a sister, but as they both get older and face the expectations that come with their ages, Junie starts to realize how dark her life is and feels unable to accept the way things are, all the while she's being haunted by the ghost of her recently deceased sister who wants Junie to get the freedom she couldn't have for herself.

This was a very strong story, I've not read a book about slavery from this perspective before, but to be fair I haven't read very many books that take place during this time in American history. I really liked how all the characters felt fleshed out and not like side characters, you could feel sympathy for Violet and Bea without excusing their racism and acceptance of the status quo, it's not easy to make a character sympathetic without excusing their bad behaviour, so this is something I always appreciate.

I do wish that there'd been more than a brief mention of the slaves who didn't work in the house, but with the author's note at the end, I understood why she made that decision.

I really appreciate when publishers send me books like this, because it's not something I would have picked up on my own but it was a very good book and I'm glad to have read it. So thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the advanced copy.
