the ending made the whole book for me. up until then, i was loving the beautiful prose and finding it wonderfully funny in places, but found it difficult to keep focus or attach myself at all to the story. but then the ending… wow. makes sense of the whole thing! the only thing i don’t quite understand (and perhaps this will change as i think about it more) is the ‘de Selby’ sections. they often lulled me into boredom, and towards the end i found myself largely skimming the footnotes, wanting to get back to the main plot. interesting book. mad. but good.
