aside from the slightly rushed ending, i found this book to be quite brilliant. i think that most people, when reading a villain origin story, tend to want something that makes them sympathize with the villain. but right off the bat, you are made aware that corionalus snow is a piece of shit, has and always will be. it’s no surprise to see where he ends up as president snow.

i loved the connections to the other novels that further explains why snow ends up hating katniss so much. she was a reminder of lucy gray. the hanging tree song, the mockingjay, even something as simple as lucy gray calling swamp potatoes “katniss”. lucy gray was reborn into katniss everdeen as an act of revenge. snow can’t land on top forever.

i also have to give credit to suzanne collins for incorporating modern day references when she can. in this novel, the reaping is held on july 4th, that speaks for itself.

i didn’t find the pacing to be too slow or rushed, other than the final chapter, and after finishing a chapter it was very difficult to put the book down (other than at the end of ch. 28, had to go take a breather for that one). it surprises me that more people didn’t enjoy this book, but at the same time i can understand why. as for me, though, i loved it. i’m excited to see the film adaptation when it releases.
