Admittedly, I picked this book up at the library because of the cover. I had no idea what the book was about, I just found the cover art to be beautiful and it was a recommendation of the library staff. So glad I got the opportunity to read this beautiful book. I genuinely cried at the end and it has been many, many years since I’ve cried from a book. I became deeply invested in the family in the novel and felt their pain as I read. I learned a lot of historical information as well. In general, the book was amazing and struck a deep chord in my soul.

I really enjoyed this book. However, there was such a long buildup over 80% of the book to an ending that came out of nowhere and honestly didn’t make sense. That left a tiny portion of the book to cover the breaking point and the fall out. Two pages to cover the aftermath of an epic cold case file didn’t really satisfy me. Maybe she’s working on making a series of these books - the character buildup is insane. I felt like I really got to know them.
