Deborah Harkness

I need to go back and read the first three books again. I was too confused about who all the characters were. I thought it was more standalone than it actually is.

This wasn't my favorite Elsie Silver, but I still devoured it. The trauma resolved a bit too neatly for me, as someone who experienced emotional familial abuse.
This story felt like one she has told before in her other books. I still enjoyed it - it just wasn't new

Younger me would have loved this one. Series of Unfortunate Events meets Hansel and Gretel = super captivating. I read this in just 2 settings. The illustrations were a great touch.

Definite saving for a read aloud in the future.

It took me about 200 pages to really get into this book. But once I devoted myself to it, I got sucked in. The romance aspect was rushed, as were some of the motivations. However, it didn't detract from the story for me. Book 2 is on hold!

Talk. About. A. Book. Hangover.

This one just shattered me. My heart broke over and over
for Ephraim and Sefi and Sevro and Mustang and all of my friends.
I'm so scared for the last book. I don't want it to be over and I'm scared for what's to come. I think books 4-6 are shockingly stronger than 1-3!

I'm just wrecked.

This just didn't land for me. It was more academic than I was expecting and a bit disparaging to established religious practices. Her stance was just odd for me. I'm glad to scratch this off my TBR, but won't read it again
