Firstborn: Poems by Louise Glück
3.0
"My first house shall be built on these sands,
My second in the sea."
There are some really lovely poems here, although overall as a collection it doesn't have the power that I know she carries later in her career.

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman
4.0
I never knew Norse Myths as well as I did Greek/Roman Myths, but they are, in their own way, perhaps more evocative. Reading these I recognise echoes of them throughout Gaiman's other works, that I didn't fully comprehend the first time. Some of the stories in the middle section seem a little dull, but where the book really hits home is the final few myths, detailing the events that lead up to Ragnarok, and then the final battle itself. There are some truly startling and beautiful moments to be found here, and the symbolic significance of them for the original audiences is something that it is fascinating to ponder. (Also, I'm in love with Hel, the half beautiful, half rotted ruler of the land of the unquiet dead. GF goals.)
