The Murderer/Fugitive storyline is one of my favourite Batman arcs. I reread it in these volumes and first of all I want to say that the art reproduction is perfect. WHEN will comics publishers stop reprinting old stories on glossy paper? They look all wrong, they feel all wrong, they are all wrong. Give me newsprint or give me nothing.
Anyway, aside from that, this story is just great. I love Bruce Wayne utterly withdrawing from his circle. I love seeing what he'd be like if he really, truly went rogue. Every now and again DC likes to tease us, or at least they did in the 90s/00s, by threatening us with what we think is a good time. Oh, you want Batman to kill? Here, have Jean Paul in Knightfall. You like Batman solo? Here he is, utterly off the rails, in Fugitive. I love it. There's nothing like a taste of what you're craving to make you appreciate what you already had. It's like giving a kid a sip of whiskey (disclaimer: I would never give a kid a whiskey).
The art is not for everyone; I know lots of people think artists like Scott McDaniel are too cartoony for the darker subject matter, and I hear that. Phillips' and Brubaker's runs could definitely have stood to have a grittier artist on them. But what can I say - be it nostalgia or genuine affection, I love that think inking and block colour use. I love it.
I loved this the first time around, and every time I've read it since I've loved it more. I love cool, detached, utterly cold Bruce Wayne. I don't want him to stay around forever - but I love that whiskey burn.
