As a lover of both music and books, this really hit the spot for me. Taking the form of an oral history, this book follows the fictional band Daisy Jones and the Six (clearly based on Fleetwood Mac) through their formation, the creative process of making an album, and their demise. Interwoven into this main narrative arc are multiple sub-plots that offer insights into some of the more periphery characters, which I think gave it a more authentic feel. At points, the book not only borders on cliche but fully replicates the cliches of every behind-the-music style exposé ever made which made me roll my eyes a bit. Moreover, there is a truly undeserving twist towards the end of the novel which felt very unnecessary. But I can forgive all that because this was such a fun read. I’m currently wading my way through my dissertation, and this was the perfect read; not too intellectually taxing but compelling and interesting enough to keep me reading.

I’m v excited for the upcoming adaption (as I was reading, I felt it would translate well to the screen), and it definitely gives ‘Almost Famous’ vibes, so if you liked that check this out. I’d also recommend listening to the Sentimental Garbage podcast episode on the book after you’ve read it. I think they give it a pretty fair review, and Tom McInnes’s theory that you can judge where rock is by what Bob Dylan is doing is very astute (and funny).
