“Grief was like a memory keeper. It showed me moments I’d forgotten and I was grateful, even as my stomach hollowed out.”

This book was both extremes for me, both delightful and a drag at different times. The Inez and Whit relationship was again both super fun at moments and others, lord have some respect for ourselves.

The romance was the big crutch of the story. I really loved the slow burn at first but it was flimsy and drawn out with the a will they/won’t that that got old. Give me more actual Egypt and magic pls!

Had some really poignant takes on grief. But it felt like the shock value of the story kept getting taken up in shocking levels.

“In the beginning the Universe was created. It has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.”

Lovingly, this isn’t for me. Love the dry British wit and has some very fun lines but getting through this relatively short book felt like a chore.

Narration is superb

“Hitler was counting above all on racism and religious bigotry to carry the day in the United States.”

“A partisan, bickering, demoralized America…”

“Dirty laundry on the congressional clothesline…”

America’s refusal to face fascism in this time has directly lead to so many of our issues now. The DOJ and Truman’s failure to take the evidence O. John Rogge presented and prosecute or share this information with the public is grotesque.

Time is a circle and everything feels helpless but this shows how good people always exist to fight the good fight.

Love that Maddow narrates

Didn’t love the epilogue

Cool premise, awful execution. Had some redeemable aspects in the toxic sludge. Oro was by far the most interesting aspect.

“When are we ever truly ready to take the next big step in our lives?”

“Condragulations!”

Cozy, campy, and laugh out loud fun! I love the look into the drag world and the fun twisty mystery! Also the pronunciation of walnut pesto pasta was delightful.

With a few loose threads I am really hopeful for more Misty Divine mysteries!!

Sobbing uncontrollably about that last chapter.

Everyone needs a Sam.

“I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”

“No cheers, this was ridiculous.”

“I wish it need not have happened in my time.”
“And so do all who live through such times.”

“I am flying from deadly peril into deadly peril.”

Long, very slow at times but ever an important read. Truly timeless.

“…but I’m okay with damnation if he’s the reason.”

“Because you don’t get to be alone right now.”

For a book I expected to be a light rom com about holiday royal families this was so much more. It was about the commodification and commercialization of joy and holidays, grief, and growth.

I struggled with the exposition, it was an info dump that was a struggle. Personally, I found Hex and Coal to be a little insta-lovey but the story was so good I can mostly look past it. I also wish we got to learn more about Halloween!!

Coal and Hex were magic and the supporting cast of characters were so fantastic! Perfect read to start off the holiday season!

Can’t wait for the second book!

Huge thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an e-Arc in exchange for an honest review!

“I have been choosing you everyday for four months now.”

“Their grin is all wickedness, infectious as root rot.”

NOTHING beats a masquerade ball scene and everything that follows had me in a chokehold. The alter scene?? Wow.

I love the queer cozy cottagecore-ness of the story. Low stakes and deeply comforting, for the most part. I also love how the queerness of the story is never a point of contention, it’s just an accepted aspect of the world.

I struggled with the info dump of an exposition. Following the description of the country was nearly impossible and I wish the authors went more into the magic system and how Margo’s grows. I thought it all tied up far too nicely with the imposing power of the Clauneck’s for it to end the way it did, but it’s cute and charming and it doesn’t need to be more than that.

And I would do anything for a second story following a pairing the story alluded too with ridiculous chemistry.
