The Principle of Moments by Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson
2.0
Things I liked:
- The concept of the plot
- The friendship between Asha and Obi (the hair braiding scene was beautiful)
- George and Obi's relationship (though I wish we'd seen more of it)
-The scene where Asha meets Aziza
Things I didn't like:
- The repetition e.g. explaining the prophecy over and over, the constant kidnapping and capture scenes, the constant overexplaination of things we already knew about
- How redundant the London plot line seemed - I honestly think it could've been removed and it would've had little impact to the overall plot
-How Xavior was forgotten for about 40 pages after he was shot
- The length of this book; 501 pages was far too long
- The many, many spelling and grammar mistakes, and sentences with missing words e.g 'would it still worth it'
- Stunted action scenes; fight scenes would pause for mass paragraphs overexplaining emotions and motivations that we as a reader are already aware of
I really, really wanted to enjoy this book and I was incredibly excited to read it. I think about 200 pages in, I probably should have DNF'd it, but I had already put in so much of my time reading it, that I felt like I needed to see it through.
The author has said she wrote this book starting at age 16, and that she finished it during her A Levels, which I think is evident through the writing. I loved the concept and the creativity of the story - I would love to revisit this author when she has matured her writing.
