I really liked this book except this one situation which made me roll my eyes so bad that I almost ended up seeing my brain: Emilia is in Congo working, making friends and even a boyfriend, meeting his whole family and she does not bother - as white people just don't - to learn ANY local language or at least refresh her basic French skills. Wow. She had THE opportunity to pump up her language skills but didn't do it because why should she bother? She speaks English and that must be enough. No.
