the first few chapters detailing her great-grandfather and her grandfathers lives were incredible; the rest of the book a bit of a slog through unanswered emails and unsatisfying answers. that's life, i suppose!

i'm a real sucker for mysteries but have never read a conan doyle story before! i'm glad to finally be boarding the train: i very much enjoyed it. my main critique (besides the weird craniometry doctor) is that this edition spoiled me a few times in the footnotes :/ i guess it's my own fault for wanting historical context lol. also, i really wish i could have read this as it was serialized — i totally plowed through the cliffhangers, so i might take it upon myself to "dracula daily"-ize the work if it hasn't been done. and i look forward to exploring more holmes soon!

the epitome of "disappointed but not surprised." appreciated the citation of statistics throughout the narrative, those are the things that really tickle my brain.
