Absolutely OBSESSED with Kingston and Saylor. So much pining. So much perfection. I could not put this down.

It really took me a while to warm up to Hazel and corban. I just couldn’t get into them. She was kind of an Internet bully to him and all their pranks and stuff just felt childish.
Eventually they did start to grow on me. I liked how they supported each other.
I did enjoy Erwin the cat and the half marathon training tho.

I was actually so for the relationship between Alice and Blackwood from the beginning. I love the way it turned out.
Alice is the sister of a Duke. A Duke who, with his two besties, is one of the dis-graces. In other words, they are bad boys. Blackwood is one of them. Alice decides she needs to get married because if her brother gets himself killed, she will be at the mercy of his evil heir. Blackwood decides to stay in london to watch over her while she’s husband hunting. Evil heir causes problems and her brother goes missing and her and Blackwood end up together for longer than is proper so they decide to get married BUT THE CHAOS IS NOT OVER.
Alice is super into social reform and helping the poor. Blackwood is super into drinking with the boys and causing chaos but it works. They are PINING. You can feel it. I loved it. I was behind them 100%. He was actually so sweet to her. They had arguments but you just knew it would work out.
I loved them as a couple!

While I loved both Marlow and Langdon, I fear this didn’t vibe with me as much as I’d hoped.
Marlow literally washed up on shore of the island that Langdon is hiding out on. He’s hiding because he was in a railroad accident last year and he’s having some issues with his recovery. Issues that are quite a secret. Marlow is the most famous courtesan in london. They have a mutual pining situation going on because they do know one another. As she recovers from her balloon wreck the two grow closer. Then he has to return her to london. But she’s done with Hollie, her benefactor, and he now wants her as his mistress.
I don’t love “be my mistress” type of stories. She’s with another man for about half the book (nothing happens between them, but one of the things mentioned a lot is how devoted she is so said man).
I did like the trust they had for one another. They both open up about secrets and such. They are truly there for each other and I love that about them. I thought the ending was so so good.
Overall, this was fine. I liked the characters more than the story though.

This was seriously my favorite book when I was younger. I honestly wanted to walk to oregon. I was a weird kid apparently and I have zero sense of direction so… glad I didn’t embark on that journey.
Hattie and company (dad, mom, 6 year old Jack, 2 year old Bennie, aunt June, and uncle tim) all set out to oregon because a paddle boat thing almost drowned her dad when he was trying to save his brother in laws coffin that had fell into the river, anyway they got a free boat ride to independence, missoura to start this quest.
Hattie is kinda me… she’s miserable, it’s hot, there are mosquitos, everyone is on her nerves, she’s uncomfy in the wagon so she’s just going to walk, she’s nosy, made one friend. Yea, the similarities.
Does anyone remember the oregon trail game where everyone died? This is that. Hemlock, lost picking berries, getting shot, getting swept away in rivers, jumping off cliffs, rattlesnakes. You name it, they were dying from it. So this is kinda dark. Also, so many animals just drop dead, Jesus. Everyone ends up walking to oregon.
Her 14 year old friend meets a 17 year old boy and thru get married. On the trail. Some other 14 year old girl marries a 30 year old man whose wife died like 4 pages before and Hattie’s mom says “they will grow to love one another”. Ma’am. Hattie wants to get married and love someone too. Sis is 13. There’s a lady who steals stuff. A woman called Mrs. Bigg who is overweight.
Honestly, it’s a lot but it wasn’t that bad. I think (not that I walked it to know) that the sites they pass were real. I know most were. Independence rock, fort bridger, chimney rock. Aunt junes bestie is… narcissa Whitman, who was real. They ALMOST winter at the Whitman Mission. Foreshadowing is something Kristina Gregory does well.
Unsure why this was my absolute FAVORITE. Other than I was also whiny and wanted a boyfriend. But overall entertaining.
Not as nice about Mormons and native Americans as The Great Railroad Race was.

So I’ve had this book for actual years and I’m not sure I ever read it though I’ve moved it to multiple houses. It’s almost 20 years old though and I’d be interested in reading a more recent version.
It’s good to hear about all of the controversies in his own words. It gives vibes like you’re just talking to a friend and he’s telling you a story, which I do enjoy.
Seeing the pictures is so interesting! Also all of the lyric sheets.
