We were ghouls in a graveyard, digging up a dead man’s grave for closure. We never considered he might want to stay buried.
I love horror stories featuring technology and Todd Keisling's work has been on my TBR for way too long, so I finally decided to pick up this novella. I enjoyed it, though it moved a little slow at times despite its short page count; in the story's defense, though, I've been fighting a reading slump for a few weeks, so it's possible that it was a "me" issue.
I grew up on the darker side of the early 2000s internet and I remember photos and videos that haunt me to this day, so I found myself commiserating with these characters in a sense. I wasn't on the edge of my seat, but I liked this novella and really thought the writing had a lot to offer, so I'm looking forward to picking up more of Todd's stories soon!
He serves justice the best he can. I serve revenge in the way it needs to be.
I've heard so much hype for this series that I'm excited to finally be picking it up, but I'll be honest, this first novella didn't quite live up to my expectations! Between the insta-love and my general dislike for Logan's character, it was tough to buy into the relationship. I didn't feel any chemistry between them (other than their unappeasable lust for one another) and I didn't appreciate Logan being as intrusive as humanly possible by constantly showing up uninvited and unannounced. I mean, you guys have been dating for what, a week, and he's showing up pounding on your door late at night without telling you he's coming over? Yikes. That'd be an instant "hell nah" from me.
On a happier note, I enjoy Lana's motive and I like Jake as a character, so I'm hoping that the focus on her "mission" will keep me engaged throughout the rest of this series.
I'm surprised, given how much I love spooky carnival settings, to say that this was my least favorite of the series so far! It just didn't have as much fun of a vibe as the first two books, but I still definitely enjoyed it and recommend it. I liked the twist! This series is such a solid, underrated MG horror series and I'm excited to read the next one!

Oh, this was too fun. I grew up in a very religious southern household, and while we mostly spent my childhood in Baptist churches, I definitely spent enough time in Pentecostal sermons to relate to the contents of this story. If anyone reads this and finds it unrealistic in how zealous and wild the congregation acts, I promise you, I have literally witnessed this sort of behavior so many times in my life! It was really interesting to see someone take that and turn it into this little horror short. Of course, the big moment of violence was not included in the Pentecostal churches I visited, but honestly, it doesn't feel totally outside the realm of possibility. 😂
What a fantastic, dreadful little story! I really love horror tales involving characters dealing with the aftermath of lost loved ones, but this story took things to a new level with the mystery surrounding what was happening in Cara's mother's house — and, more importantly, *why* it was happening. I was fully invested and couldn't put this novella down.
The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the writing felt a bit stilted at times, especially during the dialogue. That said, I definitely recommend this story and I can't wait to read more from this author!
Thank you to the author & BookSirens for the review copy! All thoughts are honest and my own.
