The Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand

Good, not great. Took a while for me to get in to it and wasn’t really motivated to read it. It started to pick up about 3/4 of the way through, but there were so many characters and very little development happening over the course of the book. The Blue Bar sounded fun. I would want to eat and dance there! About the only redeeming quality as I didn’t really love or connect with much of the book.
The Villa by Rachel Hawkins

Listened to it on Audible on a long work road trip. Overall the story was interesting. The women are the pivotal characters in the book. Spoiler, I thought it was a little unoriginal that they essentially mimic the lives of the women who stayed in the same villa decades before. I preferred the story line of Mary and Lana over Chess and Emily. Emily comes off as a victim to her circumstances and it’s frustrating how she does not stand up for herself. She’s so easily manipulated and makes you want to shake her. Its shameful that instead of truly standing up to her ex and persevering they plot to kill him…like what? That’s not woman empowerment at all. But I guess is the recreation of the story of the past, sort of.
On a side note, I thought the voice over of Chess was super annoying with her southern accent. Shouldn’t Emily have the same accent if they grew up together? That was a pet peeve. The twists were predictable and then it felt like the author knew that and tried to throw another curve ball in there at the end. Seemed contrived to me. Overall it was pretty entertaining for a long road trip.

Heartfelt Story About Second Chances
Heartfelt story about second chances, in love and in life. It took about 40% in to the book for it to pick and get going and once it did it was full speed. I felt the pacing could have been better with the storyline as I had a hard time getting in to it at first. There are great themes in the book of self-discovery, how to love an appreciate who you are when you don’t fit the mainstream mold. Overall I liked it and would recommend it.
Disclaimer: there are a couple of steamy and descriptive scenes, so be aware. You can skip those several pages and not lose the story!

My Lovely Wife review (spoiler alert)
3.5 stars
Essentially two narcissists marry and love to hate each other with a morbid attraction to each other by killing other people. I hated both main characters but persevered as I had pretty well figured out the plot twist and sure enough I was right.

If you don’t like typical Romance tropes, I.e. friends to lovers, fake dating plot…then this is not your book.
I needed a palate cleanser after a dark thriller and this was just the ticket. Quick read and thoroughly predictable but not too over the top cheesy. It is also very tame for the romance genre. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a short and sweet rom-com.
