Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

I had never really considered whether the Andromeda Strain needed a sequel. This managed to do the original justice I think, while being rather predictable. It feels very much as though it were written to make a film adaptation especially easy.
I finished it but I nearly didn't bother. If you get frustrated with characters that don't make obvious connections or are seemingly willfully ignorant then avoid this book.
I don't know if it's the audiobook delivery, or just the character dialogue or what. But something about this just continued to rub me the wrong way. Had something in common with animes that I just don't like but can't quite pinpoint. Also, the amount of character dialog that is just trying to be witty back and forth just gets exhausting to me.
Narration is not great, makes it difficult for me to focus on the book. The lack of a cohesive plot certainly doesn't help. Maybe just the wrong format or wrong time for me, but just had zero interest in finishing.
I enjoyed the first book in the series, but I found myself annoyed more often than not with this one. The book seemed uncertain about what the actual plot was going to be and the internal monologue was more negative self-talk than witty quips. Then when the ending comes along and the main character self-sabotages because you gotta keep the "will they won't they" going for another book, it was an effort to finish the last remaining bit.
