A fascinating premise with some compelling developments can't keep from getting bogged down at times by simplistic tropes and characterizations. Of the four protagonists, only two are interesting at any given time. And while certain passages are riveting, they crop up infrequently out of a rather standard and forgettable prose. At times crisp, at times expedient, "The Power" reads like a very competent YA novel, only its subject matter is too intense for that genre.

Everything that makes Miranda July an incomparable gem shines through this work. If you have seen her films or her performance art, read her short stories or seen her interviews, this novel prose oughtn't disappoint. Sexually charged, terrifying, and hilarious, this book is a trove of the delights we nestle within our modern repressions.

What others have referred to as Vuong's "obsessions" do bear out repetitively as motifs throughout this collection. But his lyric power and sensuous focus are undeniable and frequently transcendent.
