The main character drove me up the wall (why does she keep hitchhiking??) and the writing is  just this side of not bad for a James Patterson book but this was a fun, novelty read. I got a huge kick out of spotting the parts that clearly belonged to Dolly. I’m looking forward to listening to the album she wrote for this book!

A lovely read. A beautiful tribute from the author to her community and to the moments and people that raised her. As the accounting of an adolescence told through vignettes, pacing is slow so I don’t know if I would have enjoyed this as much if I tried to stretch it out over a long period of time. For once I think my binge reading served me well by giving me an opportunity to see larger swaths of Smith’s storytelling at a time.
