Vampires of El Norte by Isabel CaƱas

3.5

So, this is a tricky review for a multitude of reasons.

First off, I would like to say that this book seems to be marketed as a horror novel when in fact it's mostly a romance. The romance to horror ratio was like 90/10.
If you are looking for a true horror book I would not suggest this.

There were several parts that felt very repetitive and a lot of additional chapters that I felt could have been omitted entirely.

It wasn't until I read the authors note that I truly came to understand that the vampires were not just the creatures of the book but also as a representation of the conflict of the US encroaching on the Mexican land.

I ended up deeply falling in love with these characters and was rooting for them the whole time. In the end I feel like it was a very solid 3.5 star read (rounded up to 4 on Goodreads)

2.25

So this books falls somewhere between a 2-2.5 star read. Idk if it's just a cringe book because it's poorly written, or the time frame of when it came out, or if it's because I'm not the target age audience of the time I'm reading it but ultimately this was a struggle to get through for a variety of reasons.

The plot kinda went no where and was a little unorganized, it was a long winded story told by a high school kid vibe.
There were small details that were not really mentioned through the book that ended up being major plot points or references to locations that were shortened down or were nicknames that I basically could not remember what they were referencing.

In spite of all this cringe and struggle it was still wasn't a drag to pick up and read. It was a pure teen drama romance without much substance.
I will probably keep reading the series but don't have high hopes that it will go much of anywhere.

Also , I'm pretty sure this book took some major points from Twilight.
