i’m sad to say that this absolute brick of a book was a miss for me. once again, every single character felt painfully superficial and the story lacked everything i look forward to in adult fantasy. i feel like cc wanted to do an enemies to lovers trope but it was underdeveloped. plus the lack of investment i had for kel/conor/lin is simply disappointing. imo this book feels unloved.

can we just appreciate how gorgeous the cover is?

to gaze upon wicked gods follows ruying, a morally grey character with the “chosen one” trope, fighting for her country and falling in love with…. her colonizer? yeah, that was horrible (unnecessary even).

if i were to ignore the shoddy romance, there were still elements of the story that could be improved. the juvenile writing. the questionable choices of the main character. the worldbuilding was lacking information essential to the plot and the pacing was definitely unstable. however, debut novel aside, i found this story to be somewhat memorable for the fantasy aspects. who knows, maybe i just miss reading the poppy war.

many thanks to random house publishing & netgalley for the arc.

initially, i was intrigued by the mysterious premise of heartless hunter with the fmc being one of the only witches left. but the plot and chemistry of the characters seemed to get flatter the farther i read. the story just got less interesting due to the lack of development. i think rune & her backstory deserved much more attention because, atleast for me, she lacked personality. also, the magic system, which was what i anticipated most, told more than it showed. still, i was entertained while reading the story despite the minimal development.

if ur into reading a fast-paced romantasy with witches and witch hunters, this is for u!

many thanks to st. martin's press and netgalley for the arc.

loved the world-building and development of the power system, but the pacing was rough. the beginning was again, too slow and the ending was rushed.

i was expecting some major character development for joan but just when i think she's learned her lesson, she goes and contradicts herself. the whole situation with nick and the lius? absolutely insufferable.

anyways, it was cruel to put a soulmate trope in a love triangle. CRUEL!
