I finished this months ago, shoved it from my mind, then saw a rec that brought back how furious I still am over this book.
The authors threw me for the worst loop possible—and not with a plot twist, but with what I consider a truly awful ending. “Happy” endings are subjective, but I can’t imagine anyone thinking that this is a “good” one after the “incident” between the MCs because what do you mean, MC2 didn’t have to grovel on his goddamn knees after that literal heinous crime for MC1’s forgiveness? WHAT. DO. YOU. MEAN. If any book I’ve ever read needed—NEEDED—a true groveling scene, THIS IS IT because WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE LOOKS SUPER SAD SO YOU KNOW HE’S SORRY?????! What do you mean, MC2 had no idea that what he was doing is what it is until MC1 called it out? WHAT. ARE. YOU. SAYING. TO. ME.
I’m so frustrated and angry because, with a GOOD grovel, I’d have easily given this the three stars I had been planning throughout the first 90% or so of the book because, until that point, the writing had been decent and the storyline had been interesting enough, but nothing had wowed me—until it did, in entirely the wrong way.
The only thing I can say I’m disappointed in is that there wasn’t more about the connection between Asa and Avi in this book; other than that, I adore Asa and Zane together! This plot was more cohesive than Psycho’s and Moonstruck’s were for me; even though the subject matter is very heavy, Zane’s sass and Asa’s… Asa-ness lighten things back up when necessary.
