3.5

Brace yourself for my thoughts because they aren’t overwhelmingly positive and I wish they were! (The fact that it took me this long to read should have said everything I guess!)….i think it was a 3.5 star read for me 😬 I LOVED being in that world again. I loved the crossover elements for the most part! There were far too many characters and the constant, quick POV switches made it hard to truly connect with any of them the way the previous books did.
The stakes for the world were high, but for the characters were essentially nonexistent. Everyone was resurrected or saved so conveniently. I felt like Bryce as a character regressed a ton between her incredible growth in book 1 until now. Like she grew into her strength and confidence, but that made her revert to being kind of selfish and non-empathetic towards the people she cared about. What even happened with Ariadne in the end? Did we need that plot? The Sigrid resurrection plot felt unnecessary because we really didn’t process Ithan’s trauma through it (nor did I believe that he should have any? Like the stakes for that felt so low AND the turnout predictable?) Jesiba was the best character to me and she sacrificed herself for Bryce in a way that felt unearned? I did LOVE the Lidia and Ruhn storyline, they were the saving grace for me BUT I had to skip their sex scene after her sons were kidnapped because I was like, “are you kidding me??? Now is not the time!” It almost felt as though SJM gave herself a quota of how many scenes she needed and then just fit them in where she could? I am SO glad this was a 5 star read for you for the vibes! Overall the vibes were excellent! I truly wish the entire book had just been a Nesta, Az, Bryce team up! I think that would have helped Bryce’s character TREMENDOUSLY! Ooh! And then send Nesta and Az back to take Bryce’s parents and give her the mask because Nesta with Bryce’s mom made me EMOTIONAL! I just think she tried to do too many things in this one and the characters—which are her best writing skill—suffered for it 💛
