I wanted to like this. But the plot was choppy, the character was flat, and there was way too much male fantasy/lesbian sex that didn't ring true. It felt like a poor man's Kushiel, and if you've got the good stuff available, why read the poor stuff? I'm surprised by how many best of the year lists this one made, but despite all the ways in which I wasn't impressed, I think I'll try one of Lake's steampunk books-- he can write, I'm just not sure he can write a woman.
